Fly Fishing
Waders
When wearing Fly Fishing Waders, the
possibility of getting a " ducking " by making a misstep into a
deep hole or with the fiendish and conspiring aid of slippery
or rolling stones (which do gather moss in streams), is by no
means remote.
A good pair of fishing waders will last years if you show
reasonable care with them, and 10 years use is not unusual.
They are a must part of your fly fishing tackle for any serious
fly fishing in lakes, rivers and streams. The most popular
materials for waders today are neoprene and breathable
Gore-Tex.
Neoprene waders - Are mostly chest waders that are ideal for
long periods in cold water and they certainly will keep you
warm in winter. They are very durable and if looked after will
last you for years. Available in fixed boot style or stocking
feet to be worn with fly fishing boots or even sneakers.
If you intend walking long distances to your "secret spot" or
walking back to your car after a days river fishing neoprene
waders can get very hot and sweaty as they don't breathe to
well. The solution here is to take a pair of sneakers or
walking boots with you. You can then wear your waders draped
over your shoulders. They are heavier and bulkier than the
gortex fly fishing wader but if you are not into walking long
distances with your fishing then they are most likely your best
bet.
Easy to repair any leaks by using contact glue or purpose made
wader cement that can be carried in your fishing vest.
Breathable Waders - Gore tex waders. Can be referred to as
guide waders as these are what professional guides opt for.
While they cost more than neoprene's they are also by far the
most comfortable, they are light but warm just the same and
it's just a matter of layering your clothing to suit the
conditions. They are called breathable as that they allow
perspiration to escape from your body as you sweat.
This material will tear more readily than rubber or neoprene so
care is needed when walking through bush.
Most breathable fishing waders are chest-high, and in the
stocking foot variety anglers will require wading shoes or
boots. Some anglers favor wading shoes or boots as they give
added support and traction while fishing rivers and
streams.
Waist waders and hip waders - Many fly waders in this category
are still made of rubber which is fine for the purpose, such as
in low water summer conditions.
